Short on time and want to know if it’s possible to see London in one day? With a population of almost 9 million people and two thousand years of history, it’s hard to know where to start. It’s impossible to see all of London in one day! However, even in just 24 hours, you can still get a good taste of the various attractions. We’ve put together a list of London’s highlights, and you can combine your favourites for an amazing day out.
South Bank
For a taste of London’s city centre, go to the South Bank! This is a dynamic area, and the heart of London’s cultural scene. The nearby Southbank Centre, National Theatre, and BFI film theatre are all world-class arts venues. For those wanting a stroll, the riverside walkway is lined with trees, restaurants and historic pubs. This is also the site of frequent fairs and events.
The Tower of London
This imposing fortress was built almost one thousand years ago by William the Conqueror. It has been used for everything from a palace, to a prison, to a zoo over the centuries since. Nowadays, it is known for housing The Crown Jewels of Britain. These priceless treasures are guarded by the iconic Beefeater Yeoman Guard, a host of ravens and a prophecy! Be sure to book tickets online to skip the queues.
Richmond
Richmond is a lovely south-west London suburb. It is packed with little shops, independent cafes, wine bars and family run restaurants. We recommend visiting near evening, since Richmond is right next to the River Thames, allowing for stunning sunset views. There’s also Richmond Park, a Royal Park known for its wildlife. Spot the anthills, 750-year old oak and herds and deer! For a relaxing break from the city centre, head to Richmond.
Globe Theatre
The Globe is the replica of William Shakespeare’s original Jacobean Theatre, which burned down in 1613. It is located just a couple hundred metres from where the original once stood. You can still see 500-year old world-famous Shakespeare plays performed there to this day! Take a seat in the stalls to properly relax, or get the authentic ‘groundling’ experience with affordable standing tickets. These can be bought online or on the door, subject to availability.
Kew Gardens
Head out from central London to Kew Gardens, one of the oldest and largest botanical gardens. Here are some of the world’s rarest plants, with giant greenhouses, a Sky Walk and two botanical art galleries. Stroll the gardens, then have a bite to eat at one of the four lovely cafes with gorgeous green views. For those interested, there are free walking tours and a train with onboard commentary that circles the beautiful grounds.
Tate Modern
An exciting museum hosting a plethora of famous artwork and live performances. And the best thing about it – like most of the museums and galleries in London, it is completely free to enter! And on the other side of the bridge over the River Thames is the perfect place for lunch: Borough Market. With over one hundred stalls, it is a gourmet paradise with a spectacular range of traditional and specialty foods.
