Join us on this great tour to visit the White Cliffs of Dover and the historic city of Canterbury. Spend the morning walking the paths along the Cliffs of Dover or consider a visit to Dover Castle, then enjoy a guided walking tour of Canterbury, with time to visit Canterbury Cathedral and explore the city. This is a fully guided tour, with interesting commentary from your expert guide as you travel through the gorgeous English countryside. An essential day trip from London!
Dover: White Cliffs and Castle
Leaving London behind, we cross into the beautiful county of Kent and enjoy panoramic views of the countryside as your guide tells you about the history of the area and life in England. We soon arrive at the most famous cliffs in England!
Many tours just stop for a quick photo, but we ensure you have time for a walk along the paths above the cliffs, offering stunning views of the English Channel. Go down to the beach for the perfect photo opportunity of the White Cliffs, or admire the bustling port of Dover and the impressive Dover Castle from the cliff-top path.
You then have a choice: spend longer at the coast, admiring the beautiful scenery as you stroll along the paths provided by the National Trust OR we will drop you to Dover Castle for an optional visit (fee not included). Established in the 11th century, this sprawling cliff-top fortress has over nine hundred years of history, from the Roman times to WW2. Admire the views from the battlement, explore the grounds, or experience the hidden wartime tunnels. Consider a visit to the castle, or enjoy an extended walk on the paths along the cliffs!
Please note: in the winter, Dover Castle is only open on the weekends and in good weather. When not open, we offer an optional visit to St. Margaret’s Bay, a nearby cove where you can stroll along the base of the cliffs and explore the beach.
Canterbury: City and Cathedral
Next, we arrive at Canterbury City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site! We begin with a short walking tour, where your guide will explain the historical significance of the city, home to the famous Canterbury Tales. Admire the many lovely mediaeval structures and walk along its small charming streets as you learn about the city’s rich culture and history.
Towering above the rest of the city, Canterbury Cathedral is one of the most famous places of worship in the world. A major pilgrimage destination, the cathedral is a masterpiece of architecture and art, and one of the UK’s most-visited historic sites. You will have time to explore the Cathedral if you wish (fee not included).
We give you at least 2 hours to explore, with plenty of time for lunch and sightseeing in this lovely little city. Feel the history Canterbury as you walk among the unique buildings, grab a bite to eat or find souvenirs in the local cafes and shops, or take a relaxing ride in the traditional punting boats along the peaceful canals. There is so much to enjoy in Canterbury that we are excited to show you. We hope to see you on this tour soon!
Please note: the tour involves a fair amount of walking. There are some sloping pathways and small hills leading up to the White Cliffs viewing platform. If Dover Castle is open, there are many steps in the great tower. The walk into Canterbury city centre from the coach park takes about 15 minutes. If you have any concerns about walking, please get in touch with us beforehand, and we’ll be happy to recommend the best options for you.
